Tips On Buying An Antique Wall Clock
Antique wall clocks are not only beautiful
but they can be functional as well. The price of these
clocks is affected by the documentation that comes with them.
Before you purchase an antique wall clock, check for brand
name, model, and the date of production. It’s also important to
make certain the clock has not been repaired by someone using
poor quality workmanship.
Find out as much as you can about the history of the antique
wall clock that you wish to purchase and make sure it
still works. Ask if it’s a spring-driven clock that will run
for about eight days or a weight-driven clock that will run for
about thirty hours.
An antique key will generally come with your clock, and
antique clocks are almost always bigger and heavier than other
mordern day wall clocks. Take the time to browse through
some antique wall clock websites to familiarize yourself with
popular types and brand names. The brand name or insignia is
usually printed or engraved on the face of the clock. On
occasion, these identifications are stamped on the backplate of
the clock, and sometimes you will find paper labels pasted
there as well.
You should always have an antique wall clock appraised prior
to you purchasing it to protect yourself and your
investment in the clock. If you intend to insure your clock, an
appraisal will probably be required by your insurance
company.
You should also make certain that the antique wall clock you
purchase does not overpower the room that you will be
hanging it in, and that it goes with the décor and the theme of
the room. This is to make sure it flows with the theme and / or
decor and will not be an eye sore. Also make sure that the
wall you choose to hang it on doesn’t get a lot of direct
sunlight as sunlight can be harmful to vintage clocks.
Always remember to ask if the seller offers any of the
following:
- a reasonable return policy,
- a written guarantee of authenticity, or a warranty on
the movement.
Once you’ve purchased the antique wall clock that best fits
your home, ask the previous owner, or the owner of the shop
where you bought it, what is the best way to keep the antique
wall clock clean. You may even be able to find one of these
treasures at a yard sale but if you decide to go this route, be
very careful as there are many reproductions on the market and
you could be paying the price for an antique wall clock but
only getting a replica not worth even a quater of the
value!
